The U.S. Jihadi threats: San Diego and beyond

Moon’s article points out two important issues:  terror networks have a presence in cities across America and many are centered around Islamic centers

In a recent Breitbart article,  Michelle Moons brings additional attention to the San Diego area and its repeated ties to jihadi terror activites.   She writes:

Recent discovery of terrorist ISIS fighter Douglas McAuthur McCain’s body in Syria has spurred investigation into the radicalization of Muslims within the United States.

San Diego is fourth on a list of five cities with the most “known or suspected terrorists,” according to recently leaked classified government documents. Following the 9/11 attacks, investigations in San Diego uncovered terrorists and their links to terrorist organizations al Qaeda, al-Shabaab, and ISIS, among others.

Classified government documents obtained by The Intercept include statistics on watch-listed individuals in the U.S. The 2013 document, prepared by the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), lists the top five cities with the highest number of known or suspected terrorists (KST) in the U.S. (in order): New York, New York; Dearborn, Michigan; Houston, Texas; San Diego, California, and Chicago, Illinois.

NCTC reports have noted the high level of terrorist activity in Somalia, as terrorist group al-Shabaab has intermittently controlled various key regions of Somalia. A Center for Disease Control and Prevention document cites Office of Refugee Resettlement statistics that list Minnesota, California, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. as locations where the majority of Somalis have settled in the U.S. Thousands have come to the U.S. as refugees under the banner of fleeing war and persecution in their home country. Current population estimates of Somali-born individuals living in the U.S. range from 35,760 to 150,000.

In fiscal year 2014 so far, October 1-July 20, 290 Somalis either turned themselves in or were caught trying to sneak into the U.S. undetected through official ports of entry, according to a leaked U.S. Customs and Border Protection report obtained by Breitbart Texas. In 2010, KPBS reported on circuitous routes taken by Somalis looking to cross into the U.S. over the southwest border. Those routes would take Somalis through locations including Cuba and Tijuana, Mexico before crossing into the U.S.

Last week, we reported on how San Diego plays prominently with U.S. terror concerns.   Much of the news media has been slow to grasp this, rather focusing on the Twin City area.

COMMENT/ANALYSIS:  Besides highlighting activity in the San Diego area, Moon’s article points out two important issues:  terror networks have a presence in cities across America and many are centered around Islamic centers.   These facts have been proven repeatedly yet Islamic groups such as CAIR and MPAC continue efforts to hinder investigations concerning suspicious activities and terror links to mosques nationwide.  As we pointed out, their motives are suspect at best.

Saudi Arabia looking for U.S. to confront ISIS threat

Saudi Arabia does not engage and maintain relationships with the west as a friend but as a useful tool to protect their own self-interests.

Saudi king warns West will be jihadists’ next target

Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) (AFP) – King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has warned that the West will be the next target of the jihadists sweeping through Syria and Iraq, unless there is “rapid” action.

“If we ignore them, I am sure they will reach Europe in a month and America in another month,” he said in remarks quoted on Saturday by Asharq al-Awsat daily and Saudi-backed Al-Arabiya television station.

“Terrorism knows no border and its danger could affect several countries outside the Middle East,” said the king who was speaking at a welcoming ceremony on Friday for new ambassadors, including a new envoy from Saudi ally the United States.

The Islamic State (IS) jihadist group has prompted widespread concern as it advances in both Syria and Iraq, killing hundreds of people, including in gruesome beheadings and mass executions.

Lack of action would be “unacceptable” in the face of the phenomenon, King Abdullah said.

“You see how they (jihadists) carry out beheadings and make children show the severed heads in the street,” he said, condemning the “cruelty” of such acts.

“It is no secret to you, what they have done and what they have yet to do. I ask you to transmit this message to your leaders: ‘Fight terrorism with force, reason and (necessary) speed’.”

President Barack Obama has yet to decide whether the United States should launch raids against positions held by the Islamic State jihadist group in Syria to follow US air strikes on IS activities in Iraq.

COMMENT/ANALYSIS:  King Abdullah’s warning should be heeded, but the message serves another purpose.  He wants to sway the west (read: the United States) to take military action against ISIS/IS (Islamic State) on behalf of his country.   Saudi Arabia does not engage and maintain relationships with the west as a friend but as a useful tool to protect their own self-interests.  As noted in this report,  ISIS/IS poses a very serious threat to the Saudi monarchy.  The irony being that elements within the Kingdom have been directly responsible for supporting jihadist groups – many that have joined ISIS/IS.   The Saudi’s and other oil rich Middle East nations need to get off their collective arses and use all the military hardware we have supplied over the years to engage the jihadi threat they are facing.

U.S. Jihadis -Discounting the San Diego terror connection

Latest news reports are focusing on the Minneapolis connection between Douglas McCain and Abdiraaman Muhumed, the two Americans reported as being killed while fighting with ISIS/IS (Islamic State) in Syria.  With the large Somali presence in the Twin Cities, an active Al-Shabab terror group is almost a certainty and part of the jihadi recruitment efforts.  In February 2012, Al-Shabab and Al-Qaeda announced a merger of the two groups providing a conduit to recruitment for ISIS/IS.

McCain had lived in San Diego and at this point,  few reports have picked up on his ties to one of the city’s mosques or past Islamist activity. From Breibart:

SAN DIEGO, California — American citizen Douglas McAuthur McCain, recently killed in Syria after reportedly fighting alongside ISIS militants, has been at the center of new concerns over home-grown terrorists in the United States. McCain lived for years in San Diego, a city now identified as a hotbed for Islamic terror in the U.S.

While in San Diego, McCain reportedly attended San Diego City College; worked at the Somali restaurant, African Spice; and was connected with Masjid Nur, a mosque located in a highly Somali area of east San Diego, according to NBC news, citing a source familiar with McCain. San Diego’s 10 News has also reported McCain as connected to this mosque.

Breitbart News visited Masjid Nur the day details surrounding McCain’s death broke in the news. Men dressed in traditional attire were observed congregating and vigorously conversing in the street, just outside the building’s front gate. After taking note of this reporter, the men outside the mosque quickly dispersed.

Masjid Nur is also known as the Islamic Association & Foundation Of San Diego,  located at 3872 50th Street, San Diego, CA

A local San Diego Fox affliate reporting on Masjid Nur, made mention of another American Al-Shabaab recruit from San Diego – Jehad Serwan Mostafa :

“Overtime they’re radicalized and that can happen at schools, it can happen in prisons, it can happen at mosques,” said FBI special agent Darrell Foxworth.

A multi-agency task force is constantly looking for leads and tips to prevent terrorist activity in San Diego, but Foxworth won’t confirm nor deny if they are in fact investigating this mosque.

The FBI is currently looking for another man fighting alongside terrorists who also lived in San Diego.

Jehad Mostafa is on the FBI’s most wanted terrorists list and is accused of aiding Somali terrorist organization Al-Shabaab.

Mostafa joined Al-Shabaab when he moved from San Diego to Somalia in 2005.  His reported terrorist activities include performing, “various functions for al-Shabaab, including acting as a training camp instructor and a leader of foreign fighters. He is also skilled in the group’s media activities.”  Mostafa attended the  Islamic Center of San Diego in Kearny Mesa.

Anwar Al-Awlaki, a planner for Al-Qaeda terror operations, served as imam at the Masjid Ar-Ribat al-Islami –  a Sunni mosque in San Diego, California,  from 1996 to 2000.  He was behind two failed terror plots against the United States before he was killed in 2011.  Two of the 9/11/2001 hijackers were reported to have attended this mosque in 2000.

COMMENT/ANALYSIS: While Minneapolis weighs in heavily with the number of incidents involving Americans being recruited as Islamic jihadists, the San Diego ties should be a reminder that other U.S. locales are involved.  In 2013, we reported on terror recruits out of Alabama.  As American intelligence and law enforcement efforts start to focus on Americans being recruited for jihad, expect more news reports from cities that have become destinations for the increasing number of Muslim refugees.   American Islamic special interest groups (i.e. CAIR, MPAC, etc.) are most likely getting primed to claim increased Muslim persecution as well as play the race card as it pertains to Somali blacks.

FOLLOWUP II: Vermont Bacon Ad – behind the pork

The “bacon story” will probably not be the last report of a cultural clash in this area of New England.

We indicated in our original report  that a quick search did not disclose a mosque/masjid or Islamic center in the town of Winooski.   A 2010 census indicated the city population was 7,267.  Several days later, Peter Wilson wrote in the American Thinker:

Unfortunately, Winooski is home to a number of Muslims whose religion teaches them that pigs are filthy animals. Like Jules in “Pulp Fiction,” they do not dig on swine.

Winooski’s Muslim population is mainly Somali Bantus, originally black Africans from southeast Africa, brought north by Arab slave traders (but that’s another story). Many Bantus fled to Kenya during the Black Hawk Down period of anarchy in the early 1990s, and in 1999, the United States admitted 12,000 as refugees.

According to the Burlington Free Press, the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program resettled the majority of Somali refugees in Winooski, which has “a large number of relatively inexpensive rental units near jobs and public transit.”  In 2009, “About a third of the students in the Winooski public-school system [were] English language learners… up from about 20 percent of the student population four years ago.” Note that ten years after their arrival, the refugees’ children remain “English language learners.”

A more detailed search on our end disclosed the following:

Somali Bantu Community Association of Vermont, Inc.
325 Main Street, Suite 8
Winooski, VT 05404
www.somalibantuvermont.org

Islamic Society of Vermont
Suite 1, 182 Hegeman Ave
Colchester, VT 05446
www.isvt.org

Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program
462 Hegeman Ave, Suite 101
Colchester, VT 05446
www.refugees.org

While Wilson’s article focuses on Somali refugees, the area’s Muslim population is more diverse.  The town of Colchester is about 5 miles north of Winooski, VT and is the location of the Islamic Society of Vermont and the  Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program.   According to a 2014 news report, there are about 3,200 Muslims living in Vermont, many being refugees from  Bosnia, Iraq, Somalia and Syria.    Most arrived under U.S. resettlement programs and reside in Chittenden County, VT.  This county  includes the cities of  Colchester, Winooski, as well as Burlington – the state’s largest city.

Vermont media coverage of the state’s growing Muslim population tends to have a positive spin, usually focusing on cultural diversity.  There have been a few exceptions:

• Bosnian refugee Edin Sakoc, 54, of Burlington (a naturalized U.S. citizen) is currently facing charges of lying to immigration authorities about his involvement in war crimes as well as bribery. The Burlington Free Press reported:

A Bosnian war crimes suspect living in Burlington has been accused of trying to bribe people in his homeland who witnessed what he allegedly did, federal prosecutors in Vermont say in a new court filing.

“The government has been informed by some of its Bosnian witnesses that defendant attempted to bribe witnesses through intermediaries for testimony favorable to the defendant,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugenia Cowles and Matthew Singer, a senior federal trial attorney in Washington D.C. claim in a motion filed with U.S. District Court in Vermont last week.

Edin Sakoc, 54, is facing charges he lied to immigration officials by denying, when he entered the United States in 2001 as a refugee, that he committed any crimes while in Bosnia.

He also allegedly repeated the lie in 2007 when he applied to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. If found guilty, he could be deported. Sakoc has pleaded not to the charges.

According to court filings, Sakoc raped a Bosnian Serb woman in July 1992, aided in the murders of two elderly men who were under her care and set fire to their family home.

• In 2010 Ali Abdi, a Somali refugee residing in Burlington, was convicted of sexual assault on a 9-year-old girl. Of note is that part of his defense was based on having a “different cultural background”.  According to www.wcax.com:

Ali Abdi was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years to life in prison for sexual assault on a 9-year-old girl, despite pleas to the judge from two of his children.

Abdi had taken off during his trial, and was captured out of state. The jury was not told he ran away. He was convicted.

Abdi’s lawyer argued that the case has to be viewed as different from others, because Abdi comes from a different cultural background– he is a Somali Bantu. His lawyer, Erik Smart, told the judge that Abdi fled Somalia and spent 13 years in a refugee camp before arriving in Burlington. Smart says the Somali Bantu community has forgiven Abdi.

“I would venture to say this community views this crime differently than our own community would,” Smart told the court.

Following an appeal, in 2012 a new trial was ordered for Adbi because the Vermont Supreme Court opined that, “a juror might have been influenced by information about Somali culture he found on the Internet.”

•  A 2012 article in Seven Days Vermont reported that despite  being listed as one of the “safest cities in America”, crime is increasing in the city of Burlington, VT.  One of the instances cited:

In one case, a 24-year-old Somali immigrant was robbed and stabbed by his alleged accomplices over their share of the loot from a series of thefts. On August 19, Ahmed Hirmoge stumbled into the Champlain Farms at South Winooski Avenue and Main Street at 4:20 a.m., bloodied from stab wounds. He told the clerk someone had “jumped” him behind the convenience store and took his cellphone, bicycle, leather jacket and $130 in cash.

According to police, Hirmoge said he knew the guys who robbed him: They were all breaking into cars the weekend before and scattered when a Burlington police cruiser rolled by. Hirmoge told police he went to the gas station to “get a drink” and ran into his cohorts there, who collected their share of the “proceeds” by force.

Within hours, police had arrested two teenagers for assault and robbery: Connor Fitzgerald, a 17-year-old high school senior from South Burlington with a tattoo on his neck that reads “wild boy”; and Tam Mai, a 16-year-old with a criminal record that began when he was just 10.

COMMENT/ANALYSIS:   As we previously reported,  since 2008, refugees from predominately Muslim countries have accounted  for over 50 percent of refugee admissions to the U.S. each year.  Emergency allocation increases are being requested based on the current situation in Syria and Iraq.  It would be a safe assumption that  Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program will be handling a share of the future influx of refugees, placing them in the Chittenden County, VT area.  The “bacon story” will probably not be the last report of a cultural clash in this area of New England.

FOLLOWUP: Muslim pressure over Vermont town bacon ad

Sneakers Bistro and Cafe – Winooski, Vermont

We recently reported on a  story about Sneakers Bistro and Cafe,  a Vermont restaurant that took down an ad for bacon after a Muslim woman complained that it it offended her.  The sign read, “Yield for Sneakers Bacon”.

Now several days later,  the restaurant is feeling quite a backlash.  From USA Today:

A Winooski restaurant’s decision to take down a bacon advertisement has become the center of an online backlash.

“It’s blown up beyond all imagination,” City Manager Katherine “Deac” Decarreau said in an interview Monday.

Last week, Sneakers Bistro and Cafe removed a sign reading “Yield for Sneakers Bacon” from a garden at the Winooski Rotary after a woman who described herself as “a vegan and a member of a Muslim household” called the sign offensive in a post on Front Porch Forum.

“Given the large number of Muslim families in Winooski, as well as many others who do not eat pork for a variety of reasons, it seems unnecessary for this insensitive business sign to be at the city’s main crosswalk,” she wrote. The woman also complained that the sign “clutters an already dangerous crosswalk.”

The volume of negative comments over the decision to remove the sign was apparently significant.   The restaurant’s phone voicemail was full early Monday afternoon and the owner found it necessary to remove their Facebook page.  In response, an individual apparently not affiliated with Sneakers created a  page named, Tell Sneakers Bistro How You Really Feel.

The Burlington Free Press reported:

The restaurant’s reviews on Google and Yelp have also taken a hit, with more than 50 recent one-star reviews referencing the controversy. Some of the Yelp users hail from as far away as California and Hawaii.

In regards to the original complaint about the bacon ad, Decarreau made the statement:

As I read her post, her request came as a vegan, not as a Muslim

Austria’s jihadis – another day late and euro short

… embracing political correctness and liberal delusions of multiculturalism have overshadowed any inkling of common sense in safeguarding domestic interests.  The wake-up call may be too late.

(thanks to counterjihadreport.com  for highlighting the below referenced Gatestone article)

It was reported last week that Austrian authorities arrested  a group of Chechen immigrants on suspicion of planning to join Islamist militant groups in Syria.  A Gatestone Institute article, Austria: Springboard for Global Jihad by Soeren Kern indicates:

The Austrian government has announced plans to improve its intelligence gathering and analysis capabilities in an urgent effort to crack down on would-be jihadists in the country.

The decision by Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner to recruit 20 new intelligence officers to focus exclusively on the threat posed by radical Islam comes after police in Austria arrested nine Chechen immigrants who were on their way to wage jihad in Syria.

The move also comes amid growing concerns that Austria’s shiftless Muslim youth are becoming increasingly radicalized and vocal in their support of the jihadist group Islamic State.

The Chechens—eight men and one woman, ranging in age from 17 to 32—were purportedly planning to travel to Syria over a land route that would take them from Austria through the neighboring Balkans and on into Turkey. Four of the individuals were arrested in the southeastern Austrian province of Styria, and five others were detained in the province of Carinthia. Both provinces border Slovenia.

According to an analysis published by the newspaper Der Standard, Austria has emerged as a central hub for jihadists seeking to fight in Syria because Austria’s geographic location provides easy access to land routes through the Balkans.

Austrian intelligence officials say that most of the 130 Austrians who are thought to have travelled to Syria are Chechens. The rest are immigrants from Bosnia, Kosovo and Turkey. Approximately 60 Austrian jihadists are currently on the front lines, 50 have already returned to Austria and 20 have been killed in action.

Austria’s concerns are also focused on returning jihadists.  In a June 2014 report (translation from Gatestone), the Austrian intelligence agency BVT states:

When fighters return from the warzone, their newly acquired combat skills, traumatic experiences and changes in behavior, plus the possibility that they have become highly radicalized, represent a considerable security risk for Austria. Those who return could become involved in proselytizing activities as well as in establishing new radical centers in which they could serve as instructors. Potential terrorist attacks could be perpetrated by so-called lone wolves but also by organized terrorist groups.

The Gatestone article  further cites from the BVT report:

The number of young radicalized followers of violent Salafism in Austria continues to rise. In this context, the conflict in Syria is of urgent relevance for Austria, because systematic efforts are being made within Austria to radicalize and recruit people for the war in Syria.

The conflict in Syria has become very popular among violent extremist Salafists in Austria. The spectrum of recruits for the conflict in Syria is ethnically diverse. The motivation, however, appears to be uniformly jihadist.

So-called hate preachers can have a decisive influence on the radicalization and recruiting processes by means of ideological and personal indoctrination. Jihad is offered as the only adequate means to solving disputes between Muslims and non-Muslims. In Austria, this targeted manipulation is achieved through conspiratorial performances by charismatic leaders. Young Muslims, who are seeking alternative perspectives due to life crises, are often submissive victims to these ‘radicalizers’ and ‘recruiters’ and are often fascinated by the prospect of armed jihad.

Austrian concern over Salafism with young Muslims is apparently compounded by the increasing Muslim enrollment in public schools – a pattern that is being reflected in many European countries.  According to Kern:

Muslim students already outnumber Roman Catholic students at middle and secondary schools in Vienna, the capital and largest city of Austria, according to statistics compiled by the Vienna Board of Education (Stadtschulrat für Wien) and published by Radio Vatican website in March 2014.

The data—which show that Muslim students are also on the verge of overtaking Catholics in Viennese elementary schools—reflect an established trend and provide empirical evidence of a massive demographic and religious shift underway in Austria, traditionally a Roman Catholic country.

In the current school year, 10,734 Muslim students are enrolled in Viennese middle and secondary schools, compared to 8,632 Roman Catholic students, 4,259 Serbian Orthodox students and 3,219 students with “no religious persuasion,” the data shows.

As far as elementary schools are concerned, there are 23,807 Roman Catholic students, followed by 17,913 Muslim students, 11,119 “non-religious” students, 6,083 Serbian Orthodox students and 2,322 Protestants.

Additional indications of the growing threat facing Austria include reports of ISIS/IS  “Fan Clubs”  and jihadi promotional attire  seen  worn around Vienna.

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

COMMENT/ANALYSIS: As with the U.K., Austrian officials have been well aware of the domestic threats Islamists pose for some time with very little proactive actions to date.  Unfortunately, embracing political correctness and liberal delusions of multiculturalism have overshadowed any inkling of common sense in safeguarding domestic interests.  The wake-up call may be too late.    Another example: France

FBI agents to guard UK airports against jihadi fanatics

… the big irony is requesting U.S. assistance while the U.S. has not been able to control its own southern border.

EXCLUSIVE: FBI agents to guard UK airports against jihadi fanatics

From: Sunday Express – www.express.co.uk
By: Caroline Wheeler & Amardeep Bassey, August 24, 2014

DOZENS of FBI agents are to be posted at UK airports amid fears that Britain’s anti-terrorism efforts are failing to keep track of jihadi fanatics.

Three US officers from a specialist FBI counter-terror unit are expected to land at Heathrow on Tuesday, with another 10 arriving within the week and dozens more over coming months.

They will monitor suspect passengers as well as investigate “terror hot-spots” across Britain in the wake of the beheading of American James Foley in Iraq. Last night, however, critics claimed their arrival was an admission that cuts to police and the UK Border Force had left Britain out of its depth and overwhelmed in the war on terror.

Officially, US officers who have been monitoring terrorist activity ever since the 9/11 attacks in 2001 will liaise with the Metropolitan Police’s secretive SO15 counter-terrorism command and MI5.

COMMENT/ANALYSIS:  We’re still waiting to see additional confirmation on this and note that the  “Express”  is considered tabloid and has run conspiracy articles in the past.  That aside, in theory, a multi-national task force approach should have a positive impact for both countries.U.S. anti-terror efforts have been extremely effective since the 9/11 attacks, however the U.K. environment and demographics are not even close in comparison.  It’s a safe bet that should this agreement be valid, it is a result of  U.S. official pressure from the murder of a U.S. journalist by a British citizen who joined ISIS/IS (Islamic State). Of course the big irony is requesting U.S. assistance while the U.S. has not been able to control its own southern border.

Dutch grapple with jihadist threat

From: BBC News, The Hague
By Anna Holligan, August 21, 2014

Across Europe, governments are trying to prevent the radicalisation of young people attracted by the growing influence of Islamic State militants. More than 100 Dutch citizens are thought to be fighting for various groups in Syria and Iraq, and hundreds more have been identified as potential jihadists.

Muslims in Schilderswijk, Netherlands

Dutch counter-terrorism officials are talking of a “rebirth of jihadism in the Netherlands”.

In the Schilderswijk district of The Hague last month, a group of some 20 men were captured on video waving the black flag of jihadist groups and voicing support for the militant group Islamic State (IS) that has seized broad swathes of northern Syria and Iraq.

In the footage posted on the internet, the demonstrators can be heard chanting slogans such as “Down with America” and “Death to the Jews”

COMMENT/ANALYSIS:  While the recent murder of journalist James Foley is placing a focus on Britain,  the instances of jihadi fighters coming from European countries is increasing- especially from nations that have maintained liberal immigration policies and pushed cultural diversity.  For example: A 2013 report from the Combating Terrorism Center indicated that there were approximately 30 Swedish nationals fighting in Syria.    As of this month, the estimate is around 80.  Unconfirmed reports indicate at least 400 French recruits.  As we previously mentioned, they will be facing an even more serious threat when the jihadis return “home”.

VERMONT RESTAURANT REMOVES BACON SIGN DUE TO MUSLIM OPPOSITION AND SAFETY CONCERNS

From: www.breitbart.com
by Michelle  Moons, August 23, 2014

Local Winooski, Vermont restaurant Sneakers Bistro has removed a sign that read, “Yield Sneakers Bacon” citing opposition from a Muslim community member and safety concerns.

The sign was put up as part of a city program that allows businesses to post an advertisement in an area where they have helped maintain city flowerbeds. The sign that read “Yield Sneakers Bacon” was removed after a woman, identifying herself as a Muslim, posted in an online community forum, stating she was personally offended by the sign, according to a WPTZ News report. WPTZ wrote that the woman who complained online called the sign “insensitive to those who do not consume pork.”

COMMENT/ANALYSIS:  This incident is only a small bump in the news cycle but demonstrates a trend in the U.S.: appeasement of a small Muslim minority.  While the restaurant stated that there was also a safety issue involved in the decision to remove the sign, what triggered the removal was a complaint by a Muslim woman.   In a broader scope,  Islamic activists count on this attitude to make inroads towards the goal of reshaping western society to reflect their vision of what it should  be.    Once again, political correctness is being used as a weapon.

On a side note,  a quick search did not disclose a mosque/masjid or Islamic center in the town of Winooski.  Current estimates place the Muslim population in the U.S. at around 0.6%.  It would be a safe assumption that it is significantly less in Winooski, Vermont.   The 2010 census indicated the city population was 7,267

U.S. Jihadi killings: why minimal media coverage?

Ali Muhammad Brown – Essex County Prosecutor’s Office

There was very little national news coverage regarding the arrest and charging last week of Ali Muhammad Brown a Seattle resident and Muslim convert.  Brown went on a killing spree that took place on the west and east coasts of the U.S. involving the murders of 4 people.

What coverage that could be found was primarily from local outlets.   Some of those tended to skit around that fact that Brown’s motives were based on his devotion to Islam.

Seattle man says he killed 4 in Wash., N.J. to gain revenge against U.S.

From: LA Times
By: James Queally, August 20, 2014

A Seattle man who confessed to killing four people in Washington and New Jersey this year said each shooting was part of a mission of vengeance against the U.S. government for its actions in the Middle East, according to court documents released Wednesday.

Ali Muhammad Brown, who had already been charged in the targeted killing of a gay couple in Seattle and the point-blank shooting of a New Jersey college student, was charged Wednesday with the April slaying of 30-year-old Leroy Henderson in Skyway, Wash., according to the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

According to a criminal complaint filed in King County, Brown took responsibility for each shooting and told investigators he carried out the killings to gain retribution for lives lost during U.S. military action in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

“My mission is my mission between me and my lord. That’s it,” Brown said during a jailhouse interview in New Jersey, according to the court filings. “My mission is vengeance, for the lives, millions of lives are lost every day.”

The La Times failed to mention that the complaint indicated that Brown had stated …

“… he strictly followed the Muslim faith and as part of his beliefs, he had become angry with “evil” that the government was allowing to take place in the United States …. “

Two of the murders occurred in Seattle and the local Fox News affiliate covered it with a headline of COPS: Self-styled jihadist admits to killing 4 people, calls it ‘vengeance’ for U.S. actions in Mideast.  The story  was void of the terms Islam or Muslim with the exception of this statement by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray:

“The charging documents reveal disturbing details about Brown’s motive for committing these murders, which appears to have based on anti-American sentiment and an extreme interpretation of the Muslim faith. While Brown invoked his faith, we must be clear that Brown’s views and his actions do not reflect the values of Muslims.

“In this moment of grief, we, as one community, across all faiths and religions races and ethnicities, genders and sexual orientations, can and must renew our resolve to stand firm against violence and hatred of all kinds.”

Columnist Michelle Malkin points out that in contrast to the mayor’s statement, Ali Muhammad Brown appears to have plenty of company in Seattle:

Seattle alone has been a long-festering hotbed of anti-American, anti-Semitic jihadism.

In 2011, a Muslim terror ring led by Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif and Walli Mujahidh plotted “to kill officers and employees of the Department of Defense who worked at the (Military Entrance Processing Stations) located in the Federal Center South building in Seattle, Washington, and to kill other persons assisting such officers and employees in the performance of their duties” using “fully-automatic weapons pistols, and fragmentation grenades.”

In 2007, Seattle jihadist James Ujaama pleaded guilty to terrorism charges related to his plan to establish a terror-training ground in Bly, Oregon. He had previously pleaded guilty to aiding the Taliban.

In 2006, Everett, Washington Islamic revenge-seeker Na veed Haq shot six innocent women and killed one at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle building while spewing anti-Israel hatred and Muslim diatribes.

In 2002, James Ujaama’s mosque leader, Abdul Raheem Al Arshad Ali of the radical Dar-us-Salaam mosque in Seattle’s Central District, was first arrested on illegal weapons charges. He had provided arms to fellow Seattle-area Muslim cleric, Semi Osman. The ethnic Lebanese born in Sierra Leone had served in a naval reserve fueling unit based in Tacoma, Washington. Osman had access to fuel trucks similar to the type used by al-Qaida in the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers, which killed 19 U.S. airmen and wounded nearly 400 other Americans. Osman later pleaded guilty to illegal weapons possession.

Another militant Seattle jihadist, Muslim convert Ruben Shumpert (aka Amir Abdul Muhaimin) was arrested after an FBI raid in 2004 for his role in a terror-financing scheme. He skipped out on his sentencing hearing and turned up in Somalia, where he was killed fighting the U.S. military. Terror group al Shabaab hailed Muhaimin as a martyr.

Brown was part of the Muhaimin ring that were arrested by the FBI terrorism agents in 2004. He, along with several others, were convicted on federal bank fraud charges but prosecutors  were unable to prove the money was being used to finance terrorist operations.

COMMENT/ANALYSIS:  There have been similar spin efforts by the media and politicians to disengage any reported acts of violence by Muslims from Islamic teachings.  Prime example:  actions of Major Nidal Malik Hasan being related to workplace violence.  To deflect Islam’s influence like this is foolhardy and draws attention away from logical connections resulting in dangerous naivety.  Islamist  groups, such as CAIR and MPAC, have managed an extremely effective  PR campaigns leveraging western fears of  being politically incorrect — the fear of being labeled  an Islamaphobe.   Any phobia is based on an irrational or illogical fear.  With the murders committed by Brown, killings in Britain, killings in Europe and most recently acts of genocide by ISIS, one needs to ask if a fear of Islam  is actually  irrational or illogical.
